The Compass – author Dr. Eileen Hernandez
In my writing, I often reflect on my younger brother’s profound influence on my life, encouraging me to embrace change and fully engage with the world around me. His unexpected passing due to an undiagnosed illness left a significant void, yet his love for nature and his impact on NYC parks continue to inspire me.
In my last blog post, I shared the journey behind my creation of Calming Totems and how they’ve helped me cultivate mindfulness in my daily life. Recently, while going through his belongings, I stumbled upon a rock inscribed with the words “You Rock!” This tiny treasure sparked the idea of memorial rocks and the comfort they can bring.
While cleaning out his car, we discovered his work keys and a small, round, black glass compass. This find resonated deeply with me, as it mirrors the emotions and experiences we go through when losing someone we cherish.
I can picture my brother attaching that compass to his park uniform—a khaki collared shirt complete with badge and pins denoting his role as a Park supervisor and his passion for nature. He often spoke of the importance of having a compass—whether a physical one or the one on your phone—to guide you on hikes and adventures in the great outdoors.
Now, I hold this compass close, hoping it will serve as a guide in my own journey through life, reminding me to stay grounded and find my way to safety and purpose.
As I set off on new adventures, I urge you to take a moment to step into nature. Bring your compass along—it’s a small yet powerful reminder that no matter where life takes you, you can always find your way.
